Instead of running to Macy’s the next time your favorite sweater gets a snag or your jeans rip in the knee, make a greener choice and take the time to mend your clothing before buying something new. Sewing clubs are popping up all over Brooklyn, giving locals the opportunity to learn how to sew and fix worn clothing even if they don’t own a sewing machine.
Due to the massive amount of electricity and water needed to produce and process fibers into cloth, textile and clothing manufacturing takes a serious toll on the environment. While mending was something our grandparents never thought twice about, our generation has adopted the very unsustainable attitude of wear-tear-and-buy-new. To start living — and wearing — greener, grab your torn tops and head to one of these regular FREE sewing groups:
The Mending Circle at the Textile Arts Center — first Thursday of every month, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Brooklyn Sews at LaunchPad — every Tuesday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
BurdaStyle Brooklyn Sewing Club — meet-up time and place varies, sign up on the website for the latest updates
Craft Nights at Etsy Labs — every Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
